USAID: United States Agency for International Development:
United States of America being the lone superpower and a giant economy has distinct role in international health and assistance program. It is the largest donor of UN and WHO. Besides this, it extends financial assistance to the international community through its own agency named as USAID. The assistance of USAID is driven mainly from the directives of the government of United States as the organization works under the office of the secretary of states. The stated purpose of the foreign assistance by USAID is “furthering America’s foreign policy interests in expanding democracy and free markets while improving the lives of the citizens of the developing world”. Spending less than one-half of 1 percent of the federal budget, USAID works around the world to achieve these goals.
USAID was established in 1961 by President John F. Kennedy. Since that time, USAID has been the main US agency for extending assistance to countries recovering from disaster, trying to escape poverty and engaging in democratic reforms. It has several interest areas for international health such as HIV/AIDS, infectious diseases, Maternal and Child Health and population.
