World Health Organization
The Second World War brought victory to some and defeat to others. What it brought to mankind was “Sufferings for All”. That made almost every nation understand futility of war (….at least for some time) . In 1945 representatives of 50 countries met in San Francisco at the United Nations conference on international organizations to draw up the charter for United Nations that could work to maintain international peace and friendship. The United Nations officially came into existence on 24 October 1945.
In the San Francisco meeting, the representatives of Brazil and China proposed the formation of a health organization which could work for international cooperation on health issues. All members supported this move. In 1946, the International Health Conference held in New York approved the constitution of World Health Organization (WHO). A WHO Interim Commission was set up to work out the detailed plan. Within one year of establishment, the commission had to swing into action to combat cholera epidemic in Egypt.
Finally, on 7th April 1948 the WHO was formally born, when the Secretary General of United Nations accepted the constitution after approval by the member states. This day was later recognized as the World Health Day. Every year, the day is celebrated with an important health related theme. WHO has special status among all the UN agencies. It has its own constitution , governing body and membership. There are certain WHO member countries, who have not opted for UN membership.
