Types of International Organizations
1. Multilateral organizations.
These are funded by multiple governments (as well as from non-governmental sources), and function for the benefit of many different countries. Most of the United Nations organizations are typical of multilateral organizations. World Health Organization or WHO is the main technical wing of UN that spearheads the international health efforts. There are a few other UN agencies also that are doing specialized health promotion work, i.e., UNICEF, UNFPA, UNDCP, FAO etc.,
2. Bilateral Organizations
Bilateral organizations are the international aid and assistance agencies of individual countries. These agencies have bilateral relationship with the countries receiving the assistance. A large proportion of funding of these agencies comes from the donor government; however, many of these agencies raise funds from the public. These include USAID, DANIDA, SIDA, DFID, etc.
3. Non-governmental Organizations (NGOs)
Besides the government agencies, some NGOs are doing commendable work in international health. The NGOs are reflections of philanthropic concern of general public. These organizations either raise public donations or are run as family trusts or foundations of rich individuals and industrial houses. Although the NGOs have less resources than the UN or the Bilateral Organizations these are often more efficient because of less bureaucratic hassles. Ford Foundation, Rockefeller foundation, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation are some of the important Non-Governmental Originations dedicated to international health.
